Sarah Hyland (“Modern Family”) chatted about starring in “The Great Gatsby” on Broadway, where she plays Daisy Buchanan.
The musical was directed by Marc Bruni with choreography by Dominique Kelley, a book by Kait Kerrigan, and a jazz and pop-influenced original score by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen.
Most recently, Hyland served as a presenter at the 2025 Drama Desk Awards, which were held at the NYU Skirball Center.
All of the net proceeds from the 2025 Drama Desk Awards benefit the Entertainment Community Fund.
Lessons learned from ‘The Great Gatsby’ musical
On the lessons learned from this Broadway musical, she said with a sweet laugh, “It taught that I need to do more cardio.”
Working with Ryan McCartan and Austin Colby
Hyland had great words about her acting partners Ryan McCartan (who plays Jay Gatsby) and Austin Colby (Tom Buchanan).
“Austin [Colby] is the best in the entire world,” she said. “We love Ryan; he is so talented.”
“It has been such a dream to be able to do the show with everybody. The cast is brilliant,” she acknowledged.

On the title of the current chapter of her life, Hyland revealed, “Coming Home.”

Hyland equates the word success with “Happiness” in life.
