Nashville-based singer-songwriter and producer Sarah Cothran chatted about her debut EP “i hope you’re happy.” It came out on Friday, September 30th via Republic Records.

On the song selection process for her new EP, she said, “It took a few months to come together. I started writing it back in September of last year. I wrote a lot of different songs in my bedroom and other songs with collaborators. We listened and took them all and we figured out which ones felt the best. The five we picked felt the most authentic and the strongest songs.”

She listed “I’m Here” as her personal favorite song on the EP. She is thrilled to be on Republic Records. “It is great and awesome to be on this label. This record label was on my vision board last year so be signed with them is really cool,” she said.

Cothran started to post music online back in 2017 and built a devout audience in the process. After launching her popular “in a minor key” series on TikTok, her cover of Matt Maltese’s “As The World Caves In” exploded, tallying nearly 400 million global streams, and has since been certified gold by the RIAA in the U.S.

This summer, Sarah released her long-awaited debut single “Baby Why” which quickly amassed over 1 million global streams in just 10 days. She joined Alec Benjamin on his fall tour for select dates. “The tour has been so much fun,” she admitted. “The response from the audience and being able to perform live has been the coolest experience.”

She noted that this past year has been so “bizarre” for her and “so life-changing.” “It really changed me as a person too, and it has made my life really crazy and I am so grateful,” she said.

On being an artist in the digital age, she said, “It’s strange. Social media and TikTok opened up so many opportunities and doors. It is a really cool way to talk directly to your fans and share the music that you want to share. It has really brought a lot of cool opportunities.”

For young and aspiring artists, she said, “Put yourself out there, it is really scary. For me, even posting a video on TikTok was scary since it was something vulnerable. Don’t be scared or shy, keep pushing and it will work out.”

Cothran listed The Weeknd as her dream collaboration choice in music. “That would be really cool. I like how dark and theatrical he is. He would be a really awesome duet,” she said.

If she were to have any superpower, it would be the “power of healing.”

When asked what she go on “The Masked Singer” as she revealed that she would dress up as a “penguin.”

She defined the word success as being “happy and fulfilled” in life.” “Success varies for different people but for me, it means joy in life,” he said.

“i hope you’re happy” is available on digital service providers by clicking here. “I hope the audience gets to feel something with my music,” she said. “Music is made to move people and as long as my music can do that for one person then I feel like my job has been done.”
