Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Calvin Simon talks new album, faith (Includes interview)

On the song selection process for his new album, he said, “It was an amazing thing because I hadn’t played a thing in 14 years since I had thyroid cancer, which was right next to my vocal chords, but because of a dream I saw the lyrics that said: ‘don’t hesitate, it’s not too late to ask Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior.’ From that, the CD was born one lyric at a time.”

Simon continued, “The new album comes straight from my heart, and it is about personal experiences that I’ve had. The same opportunity is granted to them if they chose, because He is amazing.”

He listed “Needing Someone (It’s Not Too Late)” and “A Soldier’s Story” as two of his personal favorite songs on the CD. “I love ‘A Soldier’s Story’,” he exclaimed.

Regarding his plans for the future, he said, “I’m doing a live video shoot on June 25 for ‘A Soldier’s Story’ and ‘Needing Someone.’ We are in the process of getting radio play, and I’m doing a lot of TV work. I’m trying to get the band out on tour, so the people can see me in person.”

In 1997, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of the funk and soul group Parliament Funkadelic. “That was an amazing night,” he recalled. “That was in May of 1997. We got inducted with Michael Jackson, The Bee Gees and The Young Rascals. That was amazing! To get that kind of recognition from your peers meant a lot.”

On the key to longevity in the music industry, he said, “Living each day as God intended me to, and to be quiet enough to listen what he is saying.”

Simon defined the word success as “Being guaranteed eternal life because of the choice that I have made.” “All these other things (the money, fortune and fame) are only temporary. I’m working towards that permanent place when I can see Him saying: ‘job well done’. That’s success to me,” he said.
