Canadian actor Robbie Amell chatted about starring in Season 4 of the series “Upload,” which will premiere on August 25th on Prime Video.
“Upload” is a sci-fi comedy series from Emmy award-winning screenwriter Greg Daniels. It is set in a technologically advanced future where holographic phones, self-driving vehicles, AI assistance, and 3D food printers are the norm.
Also, forget about dying – instead, you’ll be “uploaded” to a virtual reality afterlife, and enjoy all the comforts of a world-class resort provided that you can afford it.
Aside from Amell, the “Upload” cast features Andy Allo, Kevin Bigley, Allegra Edwards, Zainab Johnson, and Owen Daniels.
John C. Maxwell once said: “Dreams don’t work unless you do.” This quote applies to Robbie Amell.
Synopsis of the fourth and final season of ‘Upload’
The synopsis is: In this four-part series finale event, sentient AI rapidly turns evil, threatening to wipe out Lakeview (and the world).
On top of greedy executives, lingering mysteries, plus heartbreak in VR and IRL, our characters are tested like never before. The only way they can get through it all and save humanity from deletion is by teaming up one last time.
Amell on Season 4 of ‘Upload’
On returning for the fourth and final season of “Upload,” Amell exclaimed, “I love Season 4! I think it’s beautiful and I think it’s so hard to stick the landing.”
“I think Greg [Daniels] did a great job. I think people will be sad, I think people will be mad, I think people will be happy and I think people will be satisfied,” he noted.
Working with the ‘Upload’ cast and crew
On working with Allegra Edwards and Kevin Bigley, Amell said, “Allegra is so great and Kevin cracks me up so much; everyone is awesome!”
Amell subsequently praised the entire cast and crew for being terrific. “I love these people and I’ve loved making this show,” he expressed.

Transition from ‘Code 8: Part II’ to ‘Upload’ Season 4
On his transition from “Code 8: Part II” to “Upload” Season 4, Amell stated, “There are similarities between the two because ‘Code 8’ is with friends and family, and we’ve been doing ‘Upload’ for so long that it’s like my Vancouver family.”
Jeff Chan directed “Code 8: Part II” from a screenplay that he co-wrote alongside Chris Paré, Sherren Lee and Jesse LaVercombe.
Amell continued, “It’s all the same crew from Season 1, and if they weren’t on Season 1, they started in Season 2. So, we’ve been working with the same people for so long and they are all fans of the show.”
“That transition was super easy,” he admitted. “It was a different character but Nathan is so like me innately that I just fall right back into it right away.”
Playing Nathan Brown in ‘Upload’
Amell is drawn to playing his “Upload” character, Nathan Brown, for several reasons. “With Nathan, I’m just playing a version of myself,” he admitted.
Lessons learned from the ‘Upload’ screenplay
On the lessons learned from this screenplay, Amell responded, “I don’t know. I thought the themes of Season 1 were interesting where Nathan and Nora are falling in love, and the audience and Nathan find out at the same time about his past where he may not be as great a guy as he thought he was.”
“Also, it asks the question as to whether or not we are the mistakes we’ve made, and are we our worst moments, or can people change? I thought that was something interesting that Nathan grapples with for the first couple of seasons, and he learns from Nora,” he elaborated.
“By the end, this is a guy that used to be pretty selfish and now, the only thing that matters to him is the happiness of the person he loves,” Amell acknowledged.

Transition from ‘Racewalkers’ to ‘Upload’ Season 4
On his transition from “Racewalkers” to “Upload” Season 4, Amell remarked, “For ‘Racewalkers,’ we had a lot of the same crew that we used for ‘Code 8,’ and they came onboard and worked with us.”
“Kevin Claydon and Phil Moniz are brilliant, and getting to be kind of a goofy bad guy was super fun for me,” he explained.
“The big thing for me was that the ‘Racewalkers’ movie has so much heart, and it pays homage to the movies that I love such as ‘Happy Gilmore,’ ‘Cool Runnings,’ and ‘Ted Lasso.’ It has that feel-good heart to it and I don’t think there’s a ton of those movies out now,” he elaborated.
“So, that was awesome! I loved the ‘Racewalkers’ experience,” Amell exclaimed.
Stage of his life
On the title of the current chapter of his life, Amell disclosed, “Dad Mode.”
“I just finished a movie called ‘Send a Scare,’ where I worked with director Josh Trank,” Amell said. “Josh also directed ‘Chronicle,’ which was one of my favorite movies when I first started in the business. Josh Trank was awesome. I loved working with him.”
“Right now, I’m in dad mode. Once I got home from Arkansas shooting ‘Send a Scare,’ I’ve been playing with my son,” he said.
“Also, Jeff Chan and I are trying to figure out what our next step is going to be. We’ve got two TV series in the works, and three films in the mix. We are trying to figure out which one is going to go next,” he added.
Superpower of choice
Amell revealed that his superpower of choice would be “teleportation.” “As long as I can do it to perfection, and I don’t have to worry about dying, it would be teleporting,” he said with a sweet laugh.
“I would love the convenience of it. No more planes, and if I want to be in Los Angeles, I could just snap my fingers and I would be there instantly,” he added.
Success
Regarding his definition of the word success, Amell said, “I love what I do! I love making new projects and working with new people, but I really do all this to be able to do cool things with my family.”
“So, success is putting myself in a position where I can provide the life that I want for my son and my wife [Italia] and have the ability to spend the time with them,” he elaborated.
“Also, success is the peace of mind that comes with it,” Amell said.
