Review: ‘Yurikuma Arashi’ EP 6 a commentary on mean girls & bullying

Episode six of Yurikuma Arashi, titled “The Moon Girl and the Forest Girl,” is currently streaming on FUNimation for paid subscribers. Free members can watch the same episode six days from now on February 16th.

I was depressed at the end of the last episode when Kaoru laid out a trap and caught Ginko.

Kaoru is a total b—ch and a c—t for claiming to make things up to Kureha, but lying about it behind her back. I was hoping that Ginko and Lulu were going to succeed in ambushing, killing, and devouring Kaoru.

People like Kaoru deserve that fate.

The episode begins with Kureha sitting at her bed looking at a letter that her deceased girlfriend, Sumika, had written her. Sumika, in a flash back, wrote the letter reminiscing the first time she had met Kureha at school.

Sumika “stood out,” which made her a target by the Invisible Storm.

The flashback fleshes out the backstory behind Kureha and Sumika’s relationship, which gives the latter more importance rather than being just the “victim.” Even though Sumika is dead, she is still alive in Kureha’s heart.

This flashback serves to give an explanation behind the titular episode title, which foreshadowed the inevitable reunion between Kureha and Ginko. It is obvious that Kureha’s mother predicted that Ginko would gain human form and try to seek out Kureha.

It ultimately alludes to the fact that Kureha is the “Sky Girl” and Ginko is the “Forest Girl.”

As if I thought the flashback was already interesting enough, the episode also revealed the reasons behind Sumika being called “evil” by the Invisible Storm. This shows that Kureha ultimately has no friends in school as the Invisible Storm has voted to get rid of her once, but Sumika paid the price by “betraying” the group.

Sumika stood up to the bully, but there are more bullies.

This shows that even in a royally f—ked situation like intelligent bears roaming around and killing, the mean girl bully routine still exists.

It is ultimately forced membership into the Invisible Storm and deviants are automatically marked as “evil,” which is not uncommon. We can look at CW’s Arrow as the League of Assassins marked Malcolm Merlyn for death because of his role as chief orchestrator of the “Undertaking” in season one.

Sumika ultimately shows her “brass pair” by standing up to the Invisible Storm and willing to pay with her life.

Kaoru proves to be a treacherous b—ch and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s one of the major antagonists.

I do feel that Kureha also has her own naivety to blame at the end, too. She should have been suspicious of Kaoru and the rest of the Invisible Storm for that “apology.”

This was an interesting episode of Yurikuma Arashi because it teaches us that humans can be the cruelest of all beings. It was evil for the bears to kill and eat the students, but they are doing what nature intended them to do.

Humans like Kaoru have the choice to be good or evil, but chooses the latter and justifies it in “upholding justice.” That also delves into the subject of self-preservation, which seemingly drives the Invisible Storm’s actions.

It reminded me of the recent episode of Maria The Virgin Witch as the Catholic Church is doing what it can to retain power and influence over the One-Hundred Years War. Members of the clergy were manipulating the situation like Galfa’s duel in a parallel manner that Kaoru was secretly manipulating situation with Kureha.
