Rock group Yellowcard released their new “Childhood Eyes” EP on July 21, 2023, via Equal Vision.
The band is made up of Ryan Key on lead vocals and guitar, Sean Mackin on the violin, Ryan Mendez on guitar, as well as Josh Portman on bass.
The EP opens with the unapologetic “Three Minutes More,” their spitfire collaboration with Vic Fuentes, the lead singer, guitarist, and co-founder of the metalcore group Pierce The Veil.
“Childhood Eyes” is upbeat, mid-tempo and reminiscent of their prior track “Southern Air” from over a decade ago. This new song resonated with their New York fans when they played it live at The Rooftop at Pier 17 earlier this month in Manhattan as part of their “Celebrating 20 Years of Ocean Avenue” Tour.
They immediately break into ‘Hiding in the Light,” which is extremely radio-friendly as a bop. They slow down the tempo on “Honest From the Jump,” where they are not afraid to be raw and vulnerable.
The EP closes with the stirring ballad “The Places We’ll Go,” which features the resonant voice and grit of Chris Carrabba, the frontman of Dashboard Confessional, as they leave their listeners wanting to hear more.
The only downside is that the runtime is less than 20 minutes long yet the songs are diverse and succinct. Their new sound is different, yet distinct and promising.
Hopefully, this will mean that Yellowcard will go back and record more new music for their audience.
