Review: Will Hoge captivates on new ‘Small Town Dreams’ album (Includes first-hand account)

It opens with the nostalgic and mid-tempo, country-rock tune “Growing up Around Here,” and it is followed by the poignant acoustic-driven ballad “They Don’t Make ‘ Em Like They Used To” and the melodically-powerful “Better Than You.”

“Little Bitty Dreams” is yet another acoustic ballad masterpiece, while “Guitar or a Gun” is more edgy and spitfire. HIs lead-off single “Middle of America” is one of his greatest radio singles to date, and it has an 80s, John Mellencamp vibe to it.

“All I Want Is Us Tonight” is more rocking, while he changed the pace with the piano-driven ballad “Just up the Road.” “Desperate Times” has a bluesy vibe to it, and it closes with “The Last Thing I Need” and the uplifting and fun “Til I Do It Again.”

The Verdict

Overall, Will Hoge is as strong as ever on his newest studio effort, Small Town Dreams. This album garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
