Review: Train fabulous at iHeartRadio album release party (Includes first-hand account)

Radio personality Wells Adams served as the host of the evening. “It’s going to be a fun night,” Wells said. “Are you guys ready for this?”

Train opened their set with the upbeat and fun “Drive By,” as yellow and blue lights graced the stage. “Help us out,” front-man Pat Monahan said, mid-way through the song, where he had the crowd singing along.

Monahan shared that their new album A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat is a “best day ever” record, where he would have three things in one place, it would be “a girl, a bottle and a boat.”

He went on to perform their new single “Play That Song,” which was refreshing and infectious. The audience had their iPhones in the air, and they were waving their hands up in the air during the chorus. Monahan noted that his dance moves in the song’s music video were “super funky,” “fresh” and “dope.”

It was followed by the sultry “Hey, Soul Sister” and they went on to sing the opening track of their new CD, “Drink Up,” where red lights dimmed from the stage. “Are you having fun so far?” Monahan asked the fans.

They continued with their signature tune “Drops of Jupiter,” and the mid-tempo “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” as the audience was clapping along. “There’s a lot of dancing going on out there,” he said, praising the iHeartRadio crowd. It was followed by “If It’s Love,” and he went on to take selfies with his fans. “Are you still tired from the traffic coming in?” he asked.

Monahan took the crowd on a trip down memory lane with their single “Meet Virginia,” and immediately broke into “Working Girl,” which was a fan-favorite and stand-out track off their new record. “Working Girl” had a neat echo effect to it, and he displayed his wide vocal range. He dedicated it to all the “bad-ass women” out there, since he was raised by women, and has a great deal of respect for them.

Train and the band treated the fans to Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure.” They closed their set with their popular hit “Calling All Angels.”

The Verdict

Overall, Train was superb at the iHeartRadio Theater in Manhattan, as part of their album release party. Their show garnered an A rating. Pat Monahan is like fine wine, where he only gets better with age and experience.
