This show was a part of their “Moving On!” tour and as soon as the living rock legends took the stage, their presence was met with a raucous response. They were able to excel with and without the orchestra, and Pete Townshend’s prowess on guitar is unparalleled.
Similar to Daltrey’s solo show at Forest Hills Stadium last June, The Who began their set with “Overture,” and it was followed by “It’s a Boy” and “1921.” Their performance of “Amazing Journey” was remarkable.
Equally impressive were “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” and the melodically infectious “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” where the latter two were acoustic masterpieces that really captured the rawness and the essence of the lyrics. An added treat was the inclusion of “I Can See for Miles” in their set.
They closed their memorable Madison Square Garden set with two powerhouse tunes: “Love, Reign O’er Me” and “Baba O’Riley,” which received lengthy standing ovations. The sheer power and control in Roger Daltrey’s voice is inimitable.
The Verdict
Overall, The Who were superb at The World’s Most Famous Arena as part of their “Moving On!” tour. They prove that they only get better with age and experience and that their musical catalog of rock hits will never go out of style. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are still at the top of their game, musically. This classic rock band is a must to see live in concert whenever they come to town. Their Madison Square Garden set earned five out of five stars.
