Their new single, “Revolt,” is the first single off their upcoming still-untitled album as well as the first of new material the duo that make up The Unraveling, Steve Moore and Gustavo De Beauville, have released since Moore’s recovery from a successful battle with cancer.
Moore was diagnosed in 2011 after the release of their critically acclaimed 2010 debut, 13 Arcane Hymns. He was forced to the sidelines for surgery and recovery, which took a year and a half. Beauville took that time to sharpen his production skills on a variety of projects including soundtracks and his own solo work.
What ended up being “Revolt” was the first bit of new material Beauville sent Moore. Its sound is a departure from the guitar and drums-driven rawness of their debut with a sound that resembles that of bands like Tool. There is also a feeling of hunger and urgency which could also mirror the duo’s desire to get back to work after such a long delay.
Beauville’s experience doing soundtrack music may have unconsciously seeped in as well, because this sound feels like it would fit right into a science fiction dystopian epic. The scene would be when the powerless masses decide to break free of their chains and rise up against those who before seemed untouchable.
Not only is it an anthem fit for a sci-fi epic, but it also seems that it could be an anthem for many today who are fed up with the countless injustices occurring in the world today. If their emotions were converted into music there’s a good chance it sound like “Revolt.”
With cancer in the rear-view mirror, The Unraveling is ready to rock. And nothing is going to get in the way of that.
