Review: The Marshall Tucker Band rocks Georgia Jam, honored in Macon (Includes first-hand account)

Doug Gray and the band were joined by The Allman Brothers Band original member Jaimoe, of Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, for capacity crowds at Macon’s Capitol Cox Theatre and Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse. At their Macon show, The Marshall Tucker Band received a tribute for their impact on the local music scene, and Jaimoe was honored with the “Harriett Tubman Medal of Freedom.”

Gray’s visit in Macon was quite nostalgic, especially since he and the band paid a visit to a recording studio, where The Marshall Tucker Band recorded their first demo, more than four decades ago, in 1972. Gray and the band members also visited nearby Grant’s Lounge, a staple of the music scene in Macon, where the southern rock band performed in the 70’s.

Doug Gray, the front-man and sole original member of the group, remarked, “Going back to Capricorn and Grant’s Lounge flooded me with memories.” He also acknowledged that if it was not for these two venues in Macon, the band would not exist today.

During the 2017 Georgia Jam, Gray was presented with a plaque commemorating The Marshall Tucker Band’s longstanding history with the town.
