Phil Smith opened his set with the upbeat and fun Chumbawamba tune “Tubthumping,” and it was followed by Christina singing lead on Republica’s “Ready to Go,” as white and pink lights dimmed from the stage. Smith continued with a cover of Green Day’s “Paranoia,” as Christina joined him on harmonies.
“Mulcahy’s! How are you doing? Happy Fourth of July weekend,” Christina said, prior to noting that although the weather might not have been the greatest, it is “awesome in here.” Bobby from the band delivered a solid rendition of Alien Ant Farm’s “Smooth Criminal,” with Christina dancing in the background.
After singing the Foo Fighters’ “Everlong,” they immediately broke into another classic Green Day track. “How are we doing today? Good to see you,” Smith said, prior to sharing that a patriotic bikini contest was taking place at Mulcahy’s, where a prize would have been awarded to the fan with the most patriotic bikini.
Christina showed her angst side by singing Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch,” and they picked up the pace with Barenaked Ladies’ refreshing hit “One Week.” Smith incorporated Oasis’ “Wonderwall” as a singalong with the Mulcahy’s crowd, where they sang the opening verse. “Who’s ready for Larger Than Life?” they asked.
When Christina belted out No Doubt’s “Just a Girl,” Smith went into the crowd, strumming his electric guitar, thus engaging them in their music. Smith paid homage to Gavin Rossdale and Bush with “Machinehead,” as yellow and blue lights graced the stage.
The crowd served as background singers for their version of Third Eye Blind’s “Jumper,” as they were chanting “I would understand” back to the band. Christina brought back old school Britney Spears with “Baby One More Time,” which she sang with her own twist. The inclusion of The Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” was an added bonus, as was Eve 6’s “Inside Out,” and their closing tune Green Day’s “Longview.”
The Verdict
Overall, The 90’s Band rocked Mulcahy’s last night, just in time for 4th of July weekend. They are always worth seeing live whenever they are performing at the venue. 90’s music never sounded better. Their show garnered 5 out of 5 stars.
“The band was great.They played a lot of great 90’s hits and they did excellent crowd work,” said Stephany, a fan and attendee, who was present at the concert.
