Review: The 90’s Band plays Memorial Day weekend show at Mulcahy’s (Includes first-hand account)

Their set was highly-eclectic with such 90’s favorites as “Tubthumping,” where Phil’s voice blended well with the honey-rich vocals of Bianca, who in return sang lead on “Spiderwebs” and the angst-filled “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks. She continued with such moving tunes as the Dolores O’Riordan-penned “Zombie” (of The Cranberries) and even threw some Britney Spears in there by taking their audience to her breakthrough single “Baby One More Time.”

Phil paid a moving homage to the late Chris Cornell by covering “Black Hole Sun,” and his rendition was quite haunting. “Rest in peace,” Phil said, in memory of the Soundgarden front-man.

Prior to that, The 90’s Band had fun with Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy” and Blink-182’s “What’s My Age Again?” and “All The Small Things.” Bianca delivered a sassy version of Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” and showed some angst on Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know.” One of her highlight vocals of the night was Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn.”

Phil picked up the pace with the upbeat “All Star” and had the crowd singing along to Oasis’ “Wonderwall.” Equally fun was “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts, which was the theme song from Friends, and it was great to see them tip their hats to the Long Island band Nine Days with “Absolutely (Story of a Girl).”
