On November 2nd, Canadian country star Tenille Townes headlined New York City’s Gramercy Theatre, for a great turnout of fans.
Rising artist Alex Hall warmed up the stage for her. Townes was the 2022 winner of five Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA), which included a win in the coveted “Female Artist of the Year” category.
She kicked off her eclectic musical set with “Where You Are” and immediately broke into “White Horse” and “Come as You Are.” She shared her excitement about being and performing in the Big Apple.
Townes also delivered a killer cover of Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic,” which was badass, and one that would have made Morissette proud.
It was neat to hear her perform her new single “The Last Time,” which deals with the universal feeling of sadness one gets after the realization of an occurrence in one’s life that happened for the last time.
She was able to silence the venue when she sang the soothing ballad “When I Meet My Maker,” where she showcased her crisp, blues-soaked vocals (where the listener could recall Elle King).
Townes maintained solid control over her crystalline voice throughout the course of the entire evening. At times, she proved that her resonant vocals were simply too good to be mortal.
Equally impressive was the sultry ballad “I Kept The Roses,” and she was able to rock out with “Back to Life.”
After the vivacious “Girl Who Didn’t Care,” Townes closed with “Holding Out for the One” and “Somebody’s Daughter,” where she left her fans wanting to hear more.
Townes proved that her recent CCMA wins were based on sheer merit and talent. It is evident that the Canadian country music throne belongs to her, and it is only a matter of time before she takes the U.S. country music scene by storm. Her live set at Gramercy Theatre garnered two thumbs up. Well done.
