While it was his coronation song for the fifth season of the reality singing competition American Idol almost one decade ago, its relevance and lyrics are as compelling as ever. It is no wonder that it is still being played on adult contemporary radio stations worldwide, so many years later.
“This is what we dream about, but the only question with me now, is, ‘do I make you proud?’ Stronger than I’ve ever been now, Never be afraid of standing out, but do I make you proud,” Hicks sings.
Songwriters Tracy Ackerman, Andy Watkins and Paul Wilson did an excellent job penning the tune, and Hicks really brought it to life, thanks to his sultry and powerful vocal performance. Many listeners can relate to its poignant message, and it can have some many different meanings for different people.
“Do I Make You Proud” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, as well as the Billboard Pop 100 charts, and rightfully so.
The Verdict
Overall, Taylor Hicks’ “Do I Make You Proud” is one of the most underrated songs of the decade. No rites of passage (graduation, birthday or other important ceremony) is complete without Hicks’ “Do I Make You Proud.” Hicks is all heart and soul on that tune, and he deserves to be heard again on the radio airwaves with his new music. “Do I Make You Proud” garners an A rating.
