The CD opens with the upbeat and the refreshing “Fall off the Map,” which instantly lures the listener in this new project. It is followed by their spitfire single “That Kind of Beautiful,” which features catchy backing vocals in its chorus, and the laid-back “Karaoke Song,” where they collaborate with Grammy-winning country star Darius Rucker.
“Something to Believe In” is an inspirational ballad, which features the title’s lyrics “lighter in the dark.” “Kiss Me Without Whiskey” is uptempo and sassy. The piano-driven “Almost Broken” is another poignant tune, which is a haunting duet with rising songstress Jillian Jacqueline.
They change the pace with the slow-moving ballad “Take it With Me,” which has a traditional country vibe to it. “We Got It All Tonight” is another tune that is worthy of becoming a radio single at some point in the future. “Danger is Real” has a neat message to it, while “Prettiest Girl at the Dance” is a charming love song.
“Thoroughbred Heart” is sentimental and tender, and the group is upbeat and fun on “Run Highway Run,” which is one of the best tracks on the album. “Back to Me” is nostalgic and it closes with the fiddle-driven “Ten Candle Days,” which has a Celtic vibe to it.
The Verdict
Overall, Sister Hazel stuns on their latest album, Lighter In the Dark. They prove that they are like fine wine, where they only get better with age. It is a highly eclectic project and it displays their wide versatility as a musical group. Their vocals are reminiscent of Zac Brown Band meets Uncle Kracker. This album garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
