Her new album opens with the mid-tempo “Alone in the Dark” and it is followed by her lead single “Halfway There,” which features Gary Clark Jr. on guitar.
“Long Way Back” is optimistic with a retro vibe to it, which holds true for the majority of the record. The title track, the mid-tempo “Be Myself” is autobiographical and liberating at the same time. “Roller Skate” is equally youthful and carefree. “Love Will Save the Day” is a polished emotional ballad on the project, while the mellow “Strangers Again” is the highlight track on the album. She picks up the pace with the upbeat “Rest of Me,” while she shows some angst on the politically-inspired tune “Heartbeat Away.” The CD closes with yet another youthful track “Grow Up” and the sassy “Woo Woo.”
The Verdict
Overall, Sheryl Crow is back stronger than ever with her well-crafted studio album Be Myself. Crow proves to be like fine wine, where she only gets better with age and experience. There is a lot of variety on this musical effort, and as the title says, the acclaimed songstress manages to stay true to her own artistry. Fans that enjoyed her early musical work such as “Everyday is a Winding Road,” “My Favorite Mistake” and “If It Makes You Happy” will certainly love Be Myself. It garners an A rating.
