Review: ‘Saekano’ EP 8 centers on Eriri’s suppressed love for Tomoya

Episode eight of Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend, titled “A Wingman’s Traumatic Recollection Mode,” is currently streaming on Crunchyroll for premium members. Free members can watch this same episode six days from now on March 12th.

It gets awkward when Megumi is observing the production process for one of Eriri’s erotic visual novels only to assume it’s about the game. Tomoya and Eriri are rushing with the drawing and the scanning since Summer Comiket is taking place the next day and it shows that working in a doujin circle is not completely fun.

Tomoya reveals that their target is Winter Comiket, but they still haven’t really made progress.

You may think that four to five months is plenty of time, but that is never the case.

I was surprised that Megumi took the effort to play one of the dating simulators without being persuaded by Tomoya. She is clearly getting into the allure of dating simulators, however, the LitRhap simulator is the catalyst that somewhat strains the relationship between Tomoya and Eriri right now.

It is obvious that Tomoya has feelings for Megumi even though he will never admit it.

This has been the case since the last few episode so far, but Tomoya is holding back and using the excuse that he’s only into 2D women.

But it is also obvious that Eriri has feelings for Tomoya ever since they were children. The beginning of this episode shows that LitRhap was something special between Tomoya and Eriri. I can assume that Eriri felt “betrayed” in the last episode when Izumi talked about LitRhap.

The fact that Eriri constantly looks over her shoulder shows that she is jealous of Megumi.

It gets more interesting when Megumi is at the part of the simulator where she picks an attendant and she picks the childhood friend, Servis, receiving a shocked response from Eriri. That further reinforces the suspicion that Eriri has deep romantic feelings for Tomoya, but she refuses to confront him about it.

She nervously recovers from the outburst, but viewers already know that it’s too late.

Her affections toward Tomoya are more apparent when he talks about the possibility of her leaving Blessing Software and joining Rouge en Rouge. It is a tempting offer as Eriri explains, but quickly announces that she’s finished drawing before Tomoya can explain that he would understand if she decided to join the group.

It becomes blatant, though Tomoya’s blind, when Eriri quickly plays LitRhap as she talks about how she hasn’t touched the game in eight years.

The significance of LitRhap is revealed when Tomoya revealed that the copy of the game originally belonged to Eriri. It shows that this is the one item that Tomoya and Eriri had bonded over. I can understand why Eriri was offended when Tomoya shared it with Izumi.

Summer Comiket was very interesting because I got to learn that even popular doujin circles are in the red afterward. Just because you have plenty to sell does not necessarily mean you will sell every single copy. Tomoya is a lifesaver as he comes up with a way to get people interested in Izumi’s light novel and manages to sell every single one.

But s—t hits the fan when Eriri expresses sadness, anger, and jealousy because Tomoya is never enthusiastic about her stuff. Eriri is a talented writer, however, her books are geared towards adults because of the sexual nature.

Eriri continues showing that she is unable to hold back her feelings when she tears up in heartache.

This episode of Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend left an impact on me. I liked the flow of the episode when it was funny at the beginning, educational in the middle, and emotional at the end. I think Tomoya needs to be frank with his feelings about Eriri’s work because it is obvious that he’s not into adult content.

Eriri needs to understand that Tomoya was never into sexual stuff in the first place.
