Review: ‘Saekano’ EP 11 is a battle between cousin & childhood friend

Episode 11 of Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend, titled “Ready To Start Resolving The Subplots,” is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll for all premium members. Free members can watch the same episode six days from now on April 2nd.

Tomoya has enlisted his cousin, Michiru, to help compose the music after listening to her play one of her instruments. Michiru receives a frosty reception from Utaha and a lukewarm reception from Eriri as they are suspicious of her. I laughed at Eriri’s shock of learning that Michiru is Tomoya’s cousin.

I loved Michiru’s reply, too, as it added to the humor.

It also shows that Michiru is the only girl allowed to manhandle Tomoya.

I busted out laughing when Eriri started freaking out at the revelation. It is apparent that Eriri suspects that Michiru has a romantic interest in Tomoya. Utaha picks an interesting time to “kick Eriri,” while she is down for the count.

Tomoya proves to be forceful, which shows the passion of trying to make the Blessing Software doujin work.

But, it shows that his rude and forceful manner also extends to Michiru.

Michiru is busy with school and her band, but her ultimate reason is revealed: she dislikes otaku culture and things Tomoya needs to grow out of it or he’ll never get a girlfriend.

I busted out laughing when Michiru dissed otaku culture, which caused an invisible aura to emit from Utaha’s body. The debate on otaku culture between Michiru and Utaha wasn’t something I would have expected, but I didn’t expect Tomoya’s hair to turn white in fear.

The first half exudes humor when they talk about trivial stuff like the past. It is apparent that Michiru and Eriri are jealous of each other and are competing for the title of “childhood friend.” I find it funny that Eriri feels threatened by virtually anybody, which even includes Kato and Utaha.

There is one scene that caught my attention, where there is an Easter Egg for Sword Art Online.

Michiru gives Tomoya a huge wake-up call when they talk about the former’s band and the latter’s doujin circle. The former makes a valid point that all the pieces have not been put together because of disagreements between Utaha and Eriri. It is obvious that the other members of Blessing Software are still skeptical of the visual novel project.

This causes Tomoya to second guess his intentions, but is uplifted when on a lunch date with Kato.

I enjoyed this episode because it really makes you think about whatever project that you are doing. If all of the people on board are not going to give 100-percent, then everything goes to s—t. It also proves that you need to meet deadlines if you want to present the project in time.

Tomoya finds the resolve by agreeing to compromise by agreeing to run Blessing Software and manage Michiru’s band.
