They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Unless you’re Deadpool, that is. Based on the Marvel Comic of the same name, Ryan Reynolds is back as the “Merc with a Mouth” for the second time since the dreadful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which whittled down both the actor and character to nothing more than a poorly conceived throwaway role. So rarely do franchises, let alone the original actors, get a chance to erase from our collective memories the mistakes of filmmaking past. First time director Tim Miller may have changed all that.
Former Special Forces Op Wade Wilson undergoes an experiment to cure his terminal cancer. Unbeknownst to Wade, the procedure was actually intended to make Wilson into an indestructible super soldier to be used for evil. Leaving his entire body ironically scarred, the procedure attributes Wilson with advanced healing abilities, which combined with his military training, inspires Wilson to become Deadpool, a wise-cracking, masked wrecking machine hell-bent on saving his best gal (Firefly and Gotham’s Morena Baccarin) from the clutches of those who experimented on him.
Between Ryan Reynolds’ knack for witty rapid fire one-liners and his consistent superhero physique, the actor seems to be in 110%. And that effort goes for all involved. This one of the funniest and most wickedly enjoyable trailers out right now. Co-starring MMA Superstar Gina Carano, comedian T.J. Miller and Ed Skrein of Transporter: Refueled, Reynolds has a strong cast to play off of. Pepper in a couple X-Men and comedic ultra-violence to boot and you got yourself a recipe for insanity soup that will keeps us hungry for more. Even though we’re talking about the trailer and not the finished product, Deadpool looks tough to mess up.
Now, just because Deadpool has the Marvel stamp of approval, this is not, by any means, a film for the tykes. From seeing both the comic and trailer, one might want to flex their parenting muscles on Deadpool and let the little ones know that this is big kids movie.
What with everything Deadpool had everything stacked against it from a bad first appearance in an earlier film, down to a hyper-adult oriented comic storyline, normally a red light to most producers due to losing out on the younger moviegoers, this flick decided to go all out and make one for the fans. A move which will most likely garner new readers of title. This is a big recommend for those who are into comics, action and comedy with adult themes. So, forgive Ryan Reynolds for Green Lantern and watch the Deadpool for yourself. Be your own critic. Also, be prepared to hand Marvel even more money, because it’s that good. Enjoy!
