Robbie Amell, Kevin Claydon and Phil Moniz star in the new sports comedy film “Racewalkers.”
The synopsis is: A struggling racewalking coach Ched (Robbie Amell) and a washed-up pro baseball player Matt (Kevin Claydon) with a surprisingly natural stride team up to take on the best walker in the sport.
Kevin Claydon and Phil Moniz directed this film, and they co-wrote the screenplay along with Evan Landry.
Robbie Amell is charming and hilarious as Ched Lester, and he is able to showcase a different side to his artistry as an actor and storyteller.
Kevin Claydon and Phil Moniz are noteworthy in their roles as Matt and Will respectively. All the leads have great chemistry together.
Greg Bryk is commanding as Kurt, Ched’s father. Italia Ricci also makes a fun cameo as Ava. Everybody in this cast is versatile, and offers something distinct to the story.
The movie won the award for “Best Unstoppable Feature” at the Slamdance Film Festival, and rightfully so.
The Verdict
Overall, “Racewalkers” is a film with a lot of heart to it, and there is a rawness and authenticity to it like no other.
It is filled with quick wit, warmth, and humor. Even though it may be odd at times, it is the feel-good escapism that we didn’t know we needed. There is something in it for everyone.
Compliments to Kevin Claydon and Phil Moniz for bringing this inspirational story to life. It will make viewers cry for joy in a few instances, and it ought to be enjoyed for its beauty, depth, and simplicity.
“Racewalkers” is quirky and entertaining, and it garners four out of five stars. Well done.
