On Tuesday, June 7, iconic musician Ringo Starr and his supergroup, the All Starr Band, headlined the historic Beacon Theatre in New York City for the second consecutive night, for a great turnout.

This entertaining live show was comprised mostly of tunes that Ringo sang during his tenure with The Beatles, as well as recordings from his solo music career, and cover songs.

Particularly impressive about Starr is that he allowed every gifted member of his All Starr Band to showcase their unique talents.

They kicked off their set with an upbeat and enthralling version of Carl Perkins’ “Matchbox,” where they were able to lure their audience instantly in their set. They immediately broke into “It Don’t Come Easy,” which was Starr’s first smash hit after The Beatles disbanded, and the upbeat “What Goes On,” which he co-penned with John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Sir Richard Starkey expressed his love for his Big Apple audience and displayed his witty personality. With “Pick Up the Pieces,” they were able to get the Beacon Theatre crowd on their feet.

A founding member of Toto, Steve Lukather triumphed on “Rosanna,” “Africa,” and “Hold the Line.”

After “Boys”  by The Shirelles, he performed “I’m the Greatest” and the fan-favorite “Yellow Submarine.” Colin Hay nailed the lead vocals on “Down Under.”

Ringo then turned back the clock, singing one of his old favorites, “Boys,” a Shirelles cover, and “I’m The Greatest,” penned by Lennon. He got everyone on their feet again with the universally known “Yellow Submarine.” Young fans and old sang along.

For his solo set, Hamish Stuart kicked it off with “Cut the Cake” and equally impressive were “Octopus’s Garden,” “Back Off Boogaloo,” and “Overkill.”

Starr subsequently had “Work to Do” with Hamish Stuart as they eloquently covered the classic Ohio group The Isley Brothers, and it was followed by “I Wanna Be Your Man.”

After “Photograph,” they closed with Buck Owens’ “Act Naturally,” and on a fitting note with the classic “With A Little Help From My Friends,” where he left the Beacon Theatre crowd wanting to hear more.

Ringo Starr proved that he is still at the top of his game musically and vocally. He was inducted into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1988 as a member of The Beatles, and in 2015, the prestigious Cleveland institution also recognized him with the “Award for Musical Excellence,” which is bestowed to artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.

Even at 81 years old, the former Beatle proved that age is just a number. His energy level was infectious and he exuded a great deal of charm.

The Verdict

Overall, Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band were sensational at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The audience was well aware that they were in the presence of a living music legend, and they gave him the royal welcome and respect that he deserved.

His entire band delighted as well, where everybody was able to display their distinct talents and passion for live music. Starr’s show at the Beacon Theatre garnered an A rating.
