“Retirement Plan” is an animated short film by John Kelly, which explores the facts of life.

It was directed by John Kelly, who wrote the script with Tara Lawall. Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson is voicing the lead character Ray (who is relatable to all).

This animated short is food for thought. Nothing is off limits when it comes to thinking about the future, especially when are there are so many things that are left to do in this life.

In the midst of an overstimulated, energy-poor midlife, Ray fantasizes about everything that he will finally be able to do when he retires, when he has all the spare time in the world.

While living a hapless life, Ray is dreaming of the beautiful things and the joys he will find and experience when he retires.

Retirement Plan” was one of the 15 films that were shortlisted for the Oscar for “Best Animated Short Film,” and rightfully so. The final five Academy Award nominees in this category will be announced on Thursday, January 22nd.

The Verdict

Overall, “Retirement Plan” by John Kelly is an engaging and informative animated short that paints a somber yet realistic and clever animated portrait about life and mortality through the lens of an apathetic man (Ray).

It will certainly push the envelope and it will get people talking. “Retirement Plan” ought to be enjoyed for its beauty, simplicity, and authenticity, and it garners two thumbs up. Well done.
