Smith’ eclectic set included a stunning acoustic version of “Sympathy” by the Goo Goo Dolls, and a refreshing cover of The Eagles’ “Take It Easy” and America’s “Sister Golden Hair.” He even fulfilled this journalist’s request, where he performed a soaring version of country star David Nail’s “Whatever She’s Got.”
While in country mode, Smith also paid homage to Keith Urban by singing the mellow “Little Bit of Everything” and the infectious “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16.”
He revealed that he would be performing at Mulcahy’s yet again at 10 p.m. with his cover band, The 90’s Band, which is known for playing hit songs from the 90’s era.
After a brief intermission, he returned for noteworthy rendition of Hootie and the Blowfish’s upbeat “Only Wanna Be With You,” and it was followed by Matchbox 20’s “3 AM,” and Tom Petty’s “American Girl.”
“Brown Eyed Girl” was laid-back and fun, and one of the highlight songs on his set was the charming love ballad “Die a Happy Man,” where he was able to do country singer Thomas Rhett more than justice.
Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried” was an appropriate tune for Memorial Day Weekend, and his set was quite nostalgic with such tunes as Billy Joel’s “Only The Good Die Young” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”
The Verdict
Overall, Phil Smith was fantastic at Mulcahy’s Tiki Bar on Long Island. He proved that he was able to impress his listening audience simply with his acoustic guitar and his velvet vocals. His live acoustic set garnered an A rating.
