Review: Phil Collen and Delta Deep pleasant at B.B. King Blues Club in NY (Includes first-hand account)

Aside from Collen on guitars and vocals, Delta Deep is made up of power-vocalist Debbi Blackwell-Cook, Robert DeLeo (from the Stone Temple Pilots) on bass, and Forrest Robinson on percussion and drums.

The group began their set-list with “Black Dog” and it was followed by a soaring rendition of “Bang The Lid,” where the crowd was clapping along.

They continued with “Miss Me,” which ironically enough was their encore song the last time they played in New York (at The Players), and “Treat Her Like Candy,” the latter of which featured Robinson on background vocals. Collen delivered on guitar, and this tune displayed Debbi’s impressive whistle register.

They continued with “Black Coffee” and “Burnt Sally,” prior to singing the melancholic “Whiskey” and “Private Number.” Delta Deep closed with “Mistreated” drum solo and “Down In the Delta,” the latter of which is the highlight track on their debut album. After “JB Groove” and a band introduction, they returned for an encore performance of “Feelit.”

The Verdict

Delta Deep was able to deliver at their inaugural show at B.B. King Blues Club in New York. It was an intimate performance and it featured the entire quartet (DeLeo, Blackwell-Cook, Robinson and Collen). Their concert earned an A, and they are recommended seeing live when they are in town.
