They opened their concert with Ariana Grande’s “Problem,” which was the quintessential sing-along.Their Beyonce medley of hits was equally noteworthy and superb, which included “Crazy In Love,” “Baby Boy,” “Halo,” “Sweet Dreams,” “Irreplaceable” and an angelic rendition of “If I Were a Boy.” They proved that they can take any song from any other artist, twist it and make it their own.
“How are you feeling New York City?” asked Scott Hoying from the band, prior to noting that they always have the “most fun” performing in New York, especially due to the crowd’s energy.
After expressing their gratitude towards their fans, they sang an upbeat version of Lady Gaga’ “Telephone,” which was the first mash-up of songs that they arranged as a group together.
Pentatonix noted their obsession for Sam Smith and sang a mash-up of “La La Latch,” which was haunting yet beautiful.
It was followed by a gorgeous rendition of Jazmine Sullivan’s “Love You Long Time.” “Rather Be” included neat scenery of New York City and China in the large televised screens. Kevin Olusola was stellar on cello and beat-boxing on “Julio-O,” proving that he is a musician of many talents.
Pentatonix also praised their record label, Sony Music. Other remarkable vocals included “Uptown Funk,” “Let’s Get It On,” “Evolution of Music” and they closed with “On My Way Home.”
For their encore, they brought their fans in the holiday spirit with “That’s Christmas To Me,” and they closed with their Grammy-winning “Daft Punk,” the latter of which was sheer perfection.
The Verdict
Overall, Pentatonix was phenomenal at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. There were no gimmicks: just five gifted entertainers who were able to make vocal magic solely with their dynamic vocals. Their show earned 5 out of 5 stars, and they are highly recommended seeing live whenever they are in town.
