They began their set by covering Ariana Grande’s “Problem,” which left fans spellbound. “It is surreal to be at Radio City with Kelly Clarkson,” Scott Hoying said.
It was followed by a remarkable rendition of Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s “Telephone,” where they had the audience clapping, featuring the group’s controlled harmonies. Mitch Grassi displayed his impressive falsetto on this tune, which garnered its own applause.
The group noted that it is great to be back in New York City, and that they are huge fans of Sam Smith, hence they combined two of their favorite songs of his, in a mash-up that is known as “La La Latch,” featuring Kirstie Maldonado and Scott Hoying on lead vocals.
Hoying subsequently introduced the new song in their set, OMI’s chart-topping single “Cheerleader,” and they went on to deliver a mellow and laid-back version of the reggae hit.
Kirstie sang lead on their cover of “Rather Be,” and showcased her stage presence as she walked down the platform. “New York City, how are you guys doing tonight?” Avi asked, in his rich, baritone voice, prior to introducing his fellow band-mates.
K.O. greeted the crowd, introducing their medley in honor of the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, their “Michael Jackson Medley,” which was spectacular, resonating well with every audience member.
They divided the venue into three different sections, one for Team Kirstie, one for Team Mitch and one for Team Scott, where they interacted well with their fans and inspired them to sing along to the chorus of their original recording, “On My Way Home.” Towards the end of the song, Mitch took a selfie with the crowd to cherish their Radio City Music Hall debut performance.
“Are you ready for Kelly Clarkson?” they screamed, prior to closing with their “Daft Punk” medley, which was arguably their greatest vocal performance of the evening, and the one that propelled them to worldwide fame.
The Verdict
Overall, Pentatonix was superb at Radio City Music Hall. Their a cappella vocals were crystalline, spot on and refreshing, and they put on a killer inaugural performance at this iconic venue. They have earned every ounce of success that has come their way, and their future looks even more promising in the industry. It is no wonder that their YouTube channel has received over one billion views. Their live show garnered 5 out of 5 stars.
