Veteran actresses Pauletta Washington and Priscilla Lopez are starring in the Off-Broadway show “Pen Pals,” which is being performed at the DR2 Theatre. Their runs finishes on Sunday, October 26th.
This play features a rotating cast, and celebrates the enduring power of friendship through handwritten letters that were exchanged over 50 years.
“Pen Pals” was written by Michael Griffo and directed by SuzAnne Barabas.
It was inspired by a true story, and it invites audiences into the lives of Bernie (Pauletta Washington) and Mags (Priscilla Lopez) — two women whose bond, forged in adolescence, endures for decades without them ever meeting in person.
It’s a story of relationships, connections, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between friends. “Pen Pals” is raw, honest, and compelling.
Pauletta Washington knocks it out of the park as Bernie… just when one thought she could not have gotten any better than her previous turn in this character in a former venue (where she performed back in January of 2025), she proves us wrong again.
Her diction, comedy skills and execution are all spot on… Ms. Washington will drench the audience in a wide spectrum of conflicting emotions… she will have them both laughing and crying.
Tony winner Priscilla Lopez is superb as Mags… she nails the accent and really gets into this role; moreover, their pairing epitomizes the best that this show has to offer; it was a match made in theater heaven.
With Lopez as Mags, it felt like watching “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” all over again, and she is our Maggie Smith.
The Verdict
Overall, Pauletta Washington and Priscilla Lopez deliver wonderful, heartwarming performances in “Pen Pals.” They are able to breathe fresh life into Griffo’s script.
It is highly recommended that one sees “Pen Pals” with Pauletta Washington and Priscilla Lopez in New York City before their run is over. They earn two giant thumbs up for a job well done.
