Review: Patti Smith soars on new ‘Horses’ documentary (Apple Music) (Includes first-hand account)

A Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Patti Smith is one of the most celebrated artists in punk rock history. This documentary honored the 40th anniversary of her landmark studio album Horses, which was a true musical experience in itself. The Horses documentary was directed by Steven Sebring, and Jimmy Iovine served as the executive producer.

Smith and her band members (Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty, Tony Shanahan and Jack Petruzzelli) performed the entire Horses album in sequence at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, California. If the actual concert performance was not enough, the musicians also offer backstage footage to their viewers. Her son Jackson Smith joins them on guitar, and Flea (from Red Hot Chili Peppers) also performs with them.

Horses: Patti Smith and her Band is available on iTunes.

The Verdict

Overall, the Horses documentary is intense and epic. Smith takes her listeners on a trip down memory lane to her seminal album Horses. This film is a must for any fan of punk rock music or Patti Smith, and it will certainly introduce her music to a younger generation of listeners. It garners an A rating.
