The multi-talented songstress began her set with “Have You Never Been Mellow” and it was followed by the fan-favorite “Xanadu” and the mid-tempo yet catchy “Magic.” It was followed by a medley of hits that included “If Not For You,” as well as “Please Mr. Please” and a noteworthy cover of the Dolly Parton classic “Jolene .” She showed the audience how to have a fun time with her signature tune “Physical,” and had them dancing along in the aisles.
Newton-John displayed her classically trained voice on “Cry Me a River” and later on in her set, the audience was having fun with the nostalgic “You’re the One That I Want” from Grease. Her ballad “Hopelessly Devoted to You” was sheer vocal perfection.
Equally fun was the classic “Summer Nights” from Grease, where everybody in the crowd was singing along. She continued with “We Go Together” and “Grace and Gratitude.”
“We’ve come to the last song. I’ve been so lucky in my life,” she said, prior to noting that she found “I Honestly Love You” early on in her career. “I never tire of it and every night I find something more beautiful in it,” she added. “Tonight, I would like to sing it for all of you and I would like to thank you all for coming. I wish you all health, and love and peace.”
It is safe to say that Newton-John saved the best song for last, “I Honestly Love You” — which won her a Grammy award for “Record of the Year” — which earned her a tremendous standing ovation for a superb concert.
The Verdict
Overall, Olivia Newton-John was exceptional at The Paramount. She proves that she only gets better with age. She is the epitome of grace, elegance and class. She was able to form a strong connection with her New York audience, which was aware that it was in the presence of one true musical dame. Her live show is highly recommended for all, and it garnered an A rating.
