Review: NewTown releases stunning new bluegrass album ‘Old World’ (Includes first-hand account)

Their song “Naomi Wise” reached No. 3 on the Bluegrass Today charts, thus proving that they are true force to be reckoned with in the contemporary bluegrass scene.

The CD opens with the haunting “Fly Away,” and it is followed by the upbeat and fiddle-driven “Evangeline,” and the crisp ballad “Heart of Stone.”

It continues with the infectious “Laura Lee,” and Kati Penn nails the vocals on “Forgotten War,” where the listener can recall Rhonda Vincent. “Long Hard Road” is bound to become another favorite for their fans and listeners.

After the story song “Naomi Wise,” it closes with the mid-tempo “Jump In and Drown,” and on a fitting note with the glorious ballad, “Never Miss the Sun,” where Penn’s voice is pure as the driven snow.

Our World by NewTown is available on iTunes.

The Verdict

Overall, NewTown delivers on their new bluegrass album Our World. The CD is highly eclectic and the band is comprised of top-notch musicians. Kati Penn’s vocals are crystalline and heavenly, and her fiddle playing is quite impressive. This studio effort is worth more than just a passing glance. It garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
