Review: Muse magical at the Jones Beach Theater on Long Island (Includes first-hand account)

30 Seconds to Mars (featuring Jared Leto on lead vocals) and PVRIS served as their opening acts, both of which were able to warm up the stage for the English rockers.

They opened their set with the spitfire and haunting, “Dig Down,” where they were able to lure the listener in from the first note. It was followed by the upbeat and rocking “Psycho” and “Hysteria,” where vibrant blue lights dimmed from the stage.

Muse commanded the audience’s attention the entire show. Other noteworthy songs they rocked out on included “Resistance” and “Stockholm Syndrome,” as well as “Supermassive Black Hole,” which was incorporated as a medley with Jimi Hendrix’ “Voodoo Child.”

They were able to take their fans and listeners on a musical journey with such electrifying tunes as “New Kind of Kick,” “Madness,” “Dead Inside” and “Munich Jam.”

The highlight moment of the night was when Bellamy went into the crowd to sing this journalist’s personal favorite Muse tune, “Starlight,” which was a soothing as a lullaby, with a sold-out amphitheater singing along with them, with giant balloons bouncing around the venue. He dedicated this vocal to the late Linkin Park front-man Chester Bennington. “To Chester,” he said.

After “Time Is Running Out,” the rain came pouring down, and they closed with “Mercy” and “The Globalist.” For their encore, Muse returned to perform the fan-favorite tune “Uprising,” with a killer ending, that left the audience thirsty for more. They concluded their encore with “Knights of Cydonia.” “Jones Beach. We love you,” Matt Bellamy said. “We’ll see you again. Cheers.”

The Verdict

Overall, Muse puts on a rock show like no other. Despite the rain, they nailed it. Matt Bellamy proved to be one true vocal and guitar powerhouse, and their homage to Chester Bennington was poignant. Muse’s live concert at Jones Beach garnered five out of five stars.
