Tony-nominated actress Montego Glover and Emmy-nominated actress and TV host Paige Davis are starring in the Off-Broadway show “Pen Pals,” which is being performed at the DR2 Theatre. Their run will finish on Sunday, December 7th.
This play features a rotating cast of well-known actresses, and celebrates the enduring power of friendship through handwritten letters that were exchanged over five decades.
“Pen Pals” was written by Michael Griffo and directed by SuzAnne Barabas.
The events in “Pen Pals” were inspired by true events, and it invites audiences into the lives of Bernie (Montego Glover) and Mags (Paige Davis) — two women whose bond, forged in adolescence, endures for decades without them ever meeting in person… they are purely connected with their words.
It’s a story of relationships, connections, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between friends. “Pen Pals” is organic, sincere, and captivating.
Montego Glover is both enthralling and enlightening as Bernie. She knocks this complex character out of the ballpark and nails the character’s psyche and mannerisms to the tee. Glover works well opposite a lovely Paige Davis as Mags.
Paige Davis previously portrayed Bernie in a sassy and witty fashion earlier in the season (opposite professional ballroom dancer Sharna Burgesss as Mags), and it is neat to see Davis swap characters, which showcases her wide range as a contemporary performer and storyteller.
This summer, Montego Glover played “Mama Rose” in select performances of “Gypsy” on Broadway (where she filled in for six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald) and she brought down the house each time in that iconic role.
The Verdict
Overall, Montego Glover and Paige Davis deliver moving, resonant, and dynamic performances in “Pen Pals.” They are able to breathe fresh life into Michael Griffo’s script, which proves that no two shows are ever alike.
It is highly recommended that one sees “Pen Pals” with Montego Glover and Paige Davis before their “Pen Pals” run is over. Bravo.
