Review: Mark McGrath and Sugar Ray rock The Paramount for 2015 tour (Includes first-hand account)

Sugar Ray shared the stage with such bands as Eve 6, Better Than Ezra and Uncle Kracker.

They began their set with the upbeat and fun “Always Sunny,” as the stage was graced in yellow and red lights, and McGrath really got the Long Island crowd with him every step of the way. “There are beautiful people here on Long Island at The Paramount. How are you guys feeling?” McGrath asked, prior to praising the bands that opened for him.

“Do you remember this one?” he asked, and immediately broke into their hit single “Someday.” He noticed that there were two young girls in the audience, ages 8 and 10 respectively, and thanked them for coming to see him perform and he apologized for cussing earlier in his set.

McGrath brought his fans back to 1999, with his chart-topping single “Every Morning,” where everybody was singing along. “Are you ready to sing?” he asked, midway through the song. He stressed how incredible The Paramount has been to him for allowing him to bring the “Under The Sun” tour at this venue for its fourth consecutive year, and dubbed it as an “important venue.”

Towards the end of “Answer the Phone,” McGrath showcased his impressive guitar riffs on electric guitar, and followed it up with another fan-favorite tune “When It’s Over,” prior to covering EMF’s global smash No. 1 hit “Unbelievable.” McGrath closed with his breakthrough, chart-topping single “Fly,” as purple laser lights dimmed on the stage.

The Verdict

Overall, Mark McGrath and Sugar Ray put on a high-energy show at The Paramount, and were able to bring their fans back to simpler times in the late 90s. Their concert garnered 4 out of 5 stars.
