Review: Mark Collie, Tim McGraw and Chris Janson rock on ‘Mama Tried’ (Includes first-hand account)

This impressive vocal performance took place backstage at Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “Soul2Soul” tour. It was country to the core, and they did Merle Haggard proud. The inclusion of Mark Collie in this collaboration was sheer genius, since he epitomizes the best that both modern and traditional country music have to offer. Collie’s haunting, baritone voice, helped elevate the classic to a higher level, where listener could recall Kris Kristofferson.

“Mama Tried” is one of Tim McGraw’s greatest traditional country song covers since he paid homage to the late Lynn Anderson with his moving rendition of “Rose Garden.”

As Digital Journal previously reported, Mark Collie from the hit television show Nashville, and a country singer-songwriter in his own right, launched the Prison Music Expression Program.
