Their special musical guests for the evening included Bishop Gunn, Atlantic Rhythm Section and Peter Wolf, all of which were able to warm up the stage for the iconic southern rockers.
As they took the stage, Lynyrd Skynyrd was greeted with a thunderous New York response. They began with “Workin’ for MCA,” and went on to play “Skynyrd Nation” and “What’s Your Name.” Other smash hits included “Saturday Night Special,” “I Know a Little” and “That Smell.”
The inclusion of “The Ballad of Curtis Loew” and “Whiskey Rock-a-Roller” in their set were an added bonus. They closed with “Call Me the Breeze,” and their signature song, “Sweet Home Alabama,” which was absolutely stellar.
Lynyrd Skynyrd returned to the stage for their encore, which was the song that everybody was yearning to hear: “Freebird,” and it was utterly fantastic. It earned the southern rock group their final standing ovation at the Jones Beach Theater. Lynyrd Skynyrd proved that their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was based on sheer merit.
The Verdict
Overall, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s tour stop at the Jones Beach Theater was bittersweet for many: the band’s performance was top-notch, but it was their last time performing there. There was a feeling of nostalgia in the venue, and the audience knew that they were in the presence of living southern rock legends. Their shows are a testament that their music will stand the test of time. Well done.
