They shared the stage with singer-songwriter Aaron Lewis (Staind) and Hank Williams Jr., both of which put on rocking sets.
They kicked off their show with “Workin’ for MCA,” where they were able to instantly lure the audience in their southern rock music, and they immediately broke into “What’s Your Name,” where the Long Island audience along with them, and “You Got That Right.”
Lynynyrd Skynyrd continued by playing hit after hit with such tunes as “Saturday Night Special,” “Down South Jukin’,” “That Smell” and “I Know a Little.” They commanded the Jones Beach stage well, and every song had a neat jam to it.
“Gimme Back My Bullets” was spitfire and a badass performance that fared well with their fans, especially the male listeners. “The Needle and the Spoon” was mid-tempo and infectious, with pristine harmony vocals, while “Tuesday’s Gone” was more laid-back and mellow.
“Gimme Three Steps” really got the Jones Beach audience in the patriotic spirit, and they concluded their set with “Call Me the Breeze,” and their perennial signature tune “Sweet Home Alabama,” which became the anthem for the evening on Long Island.
For their encore, the iconic southern rock group returned for a lengthy performance of their signature song “Free Bird,” which garnered them a standing ovation.
The Verdict
In summation, Lynyrd Skynyrd delivered at their show at Jones Beach. Their music is still relevant today as it ever was. Along with The Marshall Tucker Band, they are the finest working bands in the southern rock genre of music. Their concert garnered an A rating.
