Review: Lorde glorious on new studio album ‘Melodrama’ (Includes first-hand account)

She co-wrote all 11 tracks on this CD, and worked with producer Jack Antonoff. The album opens with the upbeat lead single “Green Light,” and it is followed by the haunting tune of “Sober.”
“Homemade Dynamite” is sultry with a hypnotic vibe to it, and her vocals on “The Louvre” are simply too good to be mortal.

“Liability” is more melancholic, while the refreshing “Hard Feelings/Loveless” has a retro vibe to it. Another highlight track is “Writer In The Dark,” which is filled with raw emotions. After the mid-tempo “Supercut,” it closes with a reprise of “Liability” and the carefree “Perfect Places.”

The Verdict

Overall, Lorde shines on her new studio effort, Melodrama. There is no sophomore slump here. It is more intense and darker than her breakthrough release Pure Heroine, thus showcasing her growth and maturity as a singer-songwriter. She is not afraid to show her vulnerability as a recording artist on this project. Most impressive about this collection is that every song on here tells a story. This album garners an A rating.

Melodrama is available on iTunes.
