Kevin Bacon stars as Hub Halloran in the new series “The Bondman,” which will premiere on April 3rd on Amazon Prime Video.
Hub is a murdered bounty hunter who is back from the dead after being resurrected by the Devil to trap and send back demons that have escaped from the prison of Hell.
By chasing down those demons with the help and hindrance of his estranged family, Hub learns how his own sins got his soul condemned and that pushes him to seek a second chance at life, love, and even country music.
This riveting series also stars actress and country artist Jennifer Nettles (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Damon Herriman (“Once Upon a Time In Hollywood”), Beth Grant (“No Country for Old Men”), Maxwell Jenkins (“Lost in Space”), and Jolene Purdy (“The White Lotus” and “Orange is the New Black”), among others.
Showrunner Erik Oleson deserves to be commended for his vision in bringing this horror story to life, which was created by Grainger David.
Kevin Bacon delivers a commanding performance as demon slayer Hub Halloran in “The Bondsman,” where he layers he emotions well, and nails the Georgian accent; moreover, he sustains the viewer’s attention for its entire duration.
Jennifer Nettles is effervescent as his ex-wife Maryanne (and former country music collaborator), and in the first episode, she nails a classic Linda Ronstadt number.
Beth Grant is sublime as Kitty Halloran, Hub’s naive, stubborn, yet kindhearted mother. An absolute scene stealer and spitfire in several scenes.
Damon Herriman is noteworthy and pulls off a controlled performance as the nefarious Lucky Callahan, a character that everyone loves to hate.
Jolene Purdy is bold and refreshing as Midge, who showcases her quick wit, and Maxwell Jenkins is impressive as Cade, Hub and Maryanne’s teenage son.
In fact, everyone in the cast brings something unique to the table and they are each given their own characterization.
Actor Ignacyo Matynia remarked, “Kevin Bacon’s ‘The Bondsman’ was a pleasant unexpected surprise! It had the perfect blend of grit, gore, horror, and comedy. It was well-written with a phenomenal cast that brings the words on the page to life.”
The Verdict
Overall, “The Bondsman” is a high-octane, gritty, wild and bumpy ride. Strong performances led by Kevin Bacon give this supernatural action series its beating heart.
Most importantly, it is feel-good escapism, especially in these trying times that the world is going through these days, and it deserves a second and third season.
It is highly recommended that one checks out “The Bondman” on Amazon Prime Video. This series garners 4.5 out of 5 stars. Bravo.
