Review: Kelsea Ballerini dazzles at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater (Includes first-hand account)

Ballerini shared the stage with fellow opener Chris Lane.

She opened her set with the sassy “Sirens.” “New York. What’s going on?” she asked. “Are you guys having a good time?” Ballerini continued with the fun “Yeah Boy,” as she accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, as fuchsia lights dimmed from the stage.

“New York has one of the loudest crowds I’ve ever gotten to play for,” she said, and broke into her infectious single “Dibs,” as she interacted well with the fans. “It’s going to be a good night,” she predicted. “Give it up for my buddy Chris Lane. Who is ready for Rascal Flatts? I’m so excited to hang out with you guys tonight.”

She went on to sing “Lookin’ at Stars,” where vibrant yellow lights graced the stage. After a sip of water, she went into the crowd and serenaded them with “Square Pegs,” as she shook hands, took selfies with fans and greeted fans.

Ballerini noted that it is officially time for the dance party to get started, and she treated them to a new song. She told the audience that she is working on her second studio album, and she started writing songs at 12 years old, and she subsequently released her debut album at 21 years old.

Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang the chorus of James Bay’s “Let It Go,” as well as a verse of “Sorry” by Justin Bieber, prior to singing her smash hit “Peter Pan,” which is the No. 2 song in the country. She noted that she needs their “good vibes” and encouraged the fans to sing it as loud as they can. Her vocal performance of “Peter Pan” was reminiscent of a lilting lullaby, coupled with a neat echo effect.

She closed with the spitfire “XO,” where she showcased some attitude, and had the audience clapping along, as well as her breakthrough single “Love Me Like You Mean It,” which she dubbed as a song that changed her life, and rightfully so.

The Verdict

Overall, Kelsea Ballerini was superb at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island. She displayed her bubbly personality and her sincere storytelling ability. She looked fabulous in her summer dress, as she belted out her songs. This show was a substantial indication that her 2016 nomination for the Country Music Association (CMA) “Female Vocalist of the Year” award was indeed based on merit and talent, as she has taken the country industry by storm. Her live show at Jones Beach garnered an A rating.
