Review: Kelly Lang shines on new country album ‘Obsession’ (Includes first-hand account)

It opens with the sultry country ballad, “My New Obsession,” where her crystalline vocals are reminiscent of Tanya Tucker meets Reba McEntire, which ought to be taken as a compliment. It is followed by the piano-driven “Last One Standing in the Rain,” and the mid-tempo yet melodically stunning “What Do You Do When You Don’t.”

Equally moving is the ballad “Under a Tennessee Moon,” which has nostalgic lyrics, where she pays homage to the greats of country music and the Grand Ole Opry. She shows her sassy side on “Mr. Right,” while other noteworthy tunes include the haunting “His Guitar” and the autobiographical ballad “Don’t Play Games with Me (Barbie and Ken),” where she takes her fans on a trip down memory lane to her youth.

“Hell Hath No Fury” is traditional country to the core, while “Lay Me Down Easy” is another gem on this musical effort. It closes with the mid-tempo and spitfire “Wonder Woman” and on a fitting note, with the piano-driven ballad “I’ll Just Hold My Breath.”

Obsession is available on iTunes.

The Verdict

Overall, this new album Obsession is bound to become any traditional country music fan’s “obsession.” There is something in it for everybody. Kelly Lang delivers on her beautiful new album. She proves that she is one true song stylist. This album garners an A rating.
