Actor Josh Murray (“General Hospital”) stars in the dark psychological thriller “Gym Rat,” which was written and directed by Korstiaan Vandiver.
Josh Murray stars as Lonnie Milsap, who channels his own experiences of bullying and alienation, which are rotted in his undiagnosed neurodivergent mind, into loyalty for others who are marginalized.
We discover that Lonnie’s rage is fueled not only by his own personal demons, but by a deep concern for those on the fringe.
Mariana Paola Vicente is empathetic as his girlfriend Lena, who works in the healthcare profession and wants what is best for him. Despite his struggles and flaws, she sticks by him no matter what.

Murray has solid chemistry with Vicente, and their affecting rapport allows for more resonance.
The film is rich in symbolism if one pays close attention. “Gym Rat” is a story about obsession, addiction and male body image, but it’s also about compassion that is born from pain.
Korstiaan Vandiver’s direction is both unflinching and sympathetic, where is is able to balance Lonnie’s struggles while also allowing space for some tender moments to shine between these complex characters.
Josh Murray carries this movie on his shoulders in a career-defining performance, while everybody in the cast brings something distinct to the table.
The Verdict
Overall, “Gym Rat” is a striking, emotionally-charged thriller that raises awareness on steroids and people with neurodivergent conditions.
This resonant screenplay is able to paint a vivid and somber picture of steroid use in gym culture; moreover, it will certainly spark conversations among viewers.
Josh Murray delivers a tour de force performance as Lonnie, which runs the gamut.
Murray undergoes a complete physical transformation to take on this demanding role, and he is not afraid to be bold, raw, and vulnerable; moreover, he will drench the audience in a wide spectrum of conflicting emotions.
Mariana Paola Vicente is the voice of reasons as Lena, while Greg Orvis is appealing as the diabolical gym owner Phillie.
Lou Ferrigno is both haunting and commanding as himself (and the idea of himself as perceived by Lonnie), especially since Lonnie was influenced by “The Incredible Hulk” to the point where it became an unhealthy obsession.
Actor and bodybuilder Mike O’Hearn also makes a cameo as “The Titan,” which is an added bonus. Kudos to Korstiaan Vandiver for his vision and direction in bringing this gripping story to life. “Gym Rat” is worth checking out, and it garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
