Review: Jolie and Pitt reunite ‘By the Sea’ — Trailer

When one hears that a new project is in the works for, excuse the term, Brangelina, one harkens back to the Hollywood big budget Mr. and Mrs. Smith. In By the Sea, however, it seems the power couple are flexing their more than proven acting talents in what looks to be a throwback to the French New Wave films of the 50s and 60s. This conclusion is going off of the visuals alone, of course, given there is no dialogue throughout the trailer. An interesting strategy to spark interest in the film.

Set in 1970s France, the imagery reflects the period in both character design and setting. Going off of what little plot was presented, the film revolves around a couple going through a trying time in their relationship. Stark moments of the real-life married couple lashing out in believably acted scenes gives the trailer a rawness other films may not project when using unfamiliar actors as the leads.

This being her fourth time behind the camera, Angelina Jolie has has moderate success as a director, helming such films as Unbroken and In the Land of Blood and Honey It will be interesting to see the finished venture. Having more control over the acting by directing herself, coupled with her personal connection to her co-star, could prove to be a strength or weakness in the final cut. A seasoned veteran on screen, her acting talent is not an issue, though being too close to a work in so many facets can be a hindrance as well. That said, confidence in both Jolie and Brad Pitt to make great acting choices is defiantly a strength for this film.

Not a trailer for everyone, it feels too early to say who By the Sea is aimed towards. It could be pretentious and overblown. It might be Oscar Gold. If anything, this trailer peaks the interest of the audience. Let’s not jump to conclusions until the premiere. Until then, here is the preview for By the Sea.
