Their eclectic set included the witty “Fifty Shades,” as well as the lengthy yet impressive “Henry David Thoreau.” “Keep It Right Here” was more upbeat and fun.
Prior to “Never Gone Before,” he introduced the band members, thus proving that this group is a true family affair and all the multiple roles that they handle. “Tomorrow is not guaranteed, but the older you get the more you look at tomorrow like an adventure,” he said.
“Good On the Bad Side of Town” is a song where Daniels pays homage to his late father. It was one of the most compelling songs of the night, where one could hear a pin drop in the venue during this moving performance.
The acoustic “When My Fingers Find Your Strings” worked well at City Winery, with its stunning harmonies and melodies. Daniels and the band made the audience feel like they were in their living room, due to the intimate setting of the City Winery.
Other noteworthy tunes included “Last Train to Clarksville,” “Roadsigns,” “Paris Moon” and “Hard to Hear the Angels Sing.” “Detroit Train” has a haunting vibe to it. Daniels shared that “Recreational Vehicle” was based on a true story, and he displayed his storytelling ability on the tune.
Their live album, Acoustic Sittin’ Tour 2018, is available on iTunes. It is a collection that will take their listeners on a true musical journey.
The Verdict
Overall, Jeff Daniels was able to command the City Winery stage well with Ben Daniels, and his band. For anybody who was not a fan or unfamiliar with Daniels’ music previously, they would have left the venue with a new appreciation of Jeff and Ben Daniels, and their gifted band. Jeff Daniels proves that his talent is limitless, and he is not afraid to speak his mind and sings about things that are real to him. Their show at City Winery in New York garnered an A rating. Well done.
