Review: Jeff Bridges releases pleasant spoken word album ‘Sleeping Tapes’ (Includes first-hand account)

Bridges is best known as “The Dude” in The Big Lebowski and his latest studio offering is filled with ambient sounds and soothing stories that are narrated thanks to his rich, mellow voice. The proceeds from this album, will go towards his passion project, “No Kid Hungry.”

It opens with an introduction that is an overview of the entire CD, and it is followed by the peaceful “Sleep, Dream, Wake Up,” while “Chimes For Dreams” has a haunting vibe to it. He continues with an appropriate humming tune entitled “Hummmmmm,” where it is impressive as for how long he is able to hold that last note.

Due to its conversational lines, “Good morning, Sweetheart” feels as if it a scene from a Bridges movie, and the same holds true for “See You At the Dreaming Tree.”

“A Glass Water” is a warm listen, and a neat rain effect is heard in “The Raven.” “The Hen” is haunting yet distinct, while “Ikea” sounds like an overdubbed commercial. “My Keys” is ambient, while “Temescal Canyon” is lengthy and impressive.

It closes with “Feeling Good,” “Seeing With My Eyes Closed” and “Goodnight (We’re All In This Together)” is the perfect epilogue, that is worthy to be repeated each night. The best part is where he gives “No Kid Hungry” a plug in the final recording.

The Verdict

Overall, a sleeping aid is not necessary when you have Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges to calm you down and put you to sleep. He delivers on Sleeping Tapes, and proves that he only gets better with age. It earns 4 out of 5 stars. Do not be surprised if it scores a Grammy nomination next year in the “Spoken Word” album category. Well done Jeff Bridges.
