Sara Bareilles was this year’s recipient of the coveted Hal David Starlight Award, an award that Mraz had won in the past. This award is bestowed upon young songwriters that are making a significant impact in the music business with their original songs.
On being a part of this year’s Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony, Mraz said, “I am honored. I got to come into this about 10 years ago when I won the Hal David Starlight Award, and now I am back to present it to Sara Bareilles. This is an award that is given to a young writer who is making an outstanding contribution to the world with their original work, and Sara has been doing that for a long time, and I am glad she is being recognized.”
A two-time Grammy winner, Mraz complimented Bareilles for every song that she sings being an event; moreover, he praised her soul as a songwriter. When Bareilles received her award, she performed her song “She Used To Be Mine,” which was a part of What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress from the musical Waitress.
Mraz defined the word success as “Being able to do what you love.” “If you can wake every day and do what you love, and live your joy, that is success,” he said.
