James Preston (“The Bay”) stars as Vietnam veteran Jonathan Teller, a man who is struggling with guilt, PTSD, and hallucinations in “The Plastic Men,” which was released on July 29th.
This raw, unflinching movie was written and directed by Samuel Gonzalez Jr. It was produced by Matthew Hersh, Gregori J. Martin (“The Bay”), and Gigi Gustin.
In “The Plastic Men,” Jonathan Teller has suicidal ideation, however, a chance encounter with a mysterious woman Judy changes everything for him. Preston is able to carry this film on his shoulders as he wrestles his character’s own morality, sanity, and inner demons.
Preston captures the psyche of his complex character and he layers his emotions well. He will certainly make viewers feel for people that are suffering from PTSD.
Aaron Dalla Villa delivers an intense yet controlled performance as Abbott, another man who is battling his own inner struggles, while William Fichtner does a haunting job with the narration of the film, and Melanie Martyn (who also serves as an executive producer) melts hearts as Judy in a sentimental performance.
One of the most compelling and emotionally-charged scenes takes place in the VA office opposite an appealing Meredith Thomas as Ms. Anderson.
Preston’s gripping rapport with Villa allows for more resonance as they take the audience on an exhausting ride.
The Verdict
Overall, “The Plastic Men” is a riveting thriller from start to finish that will certainly sustain the audience’s attention, and it will simultaneously spark conversations as it raises awareness on PTSD and the veteran population. It’s a moving tale of resilience, tenacity, and redemption.
The acting performances are noteworthy all around, and the same holds true for Samuel Gonzalez Jr.’s rich and resonant screenplay and his exceptional direction.
The cast and crew are able to shed light on these relevant issues that are affecting our veterans these days. “The Plastic Men” garners 4.5 out of 5 stars. Well done.
