Singer-songwriter J. Brown had released his sophomore R&B/soul album “The Art of Making Love.”

It opens with “Making Love,” which has a Chris Brown meets Sam Smith vibe to it, and it is followed by “When She Walked In,” which has a retro ’80s vibe to it, and “123 Fourplay.”

“Morning After” is uplifting, and “Beautiful” stands out sonically and lyrically, where the words are pure poetry.

R&B crooner Kevin Ross is featured on “Weightless,” which he also wrote and produced, and equally memorable is “If You Could See You,” which is filled with vitality and positivity.

After the soothing “Don’t Leave,” it closes with the expressive ballad “My Whole Heart,” which has a stirring vibe to it, and “Do You Recall,” where his controlled voice is reminiscent to Maxwell’s.

His mission with this record is to encourage both women and men to reconnect with the emotional and mental aspects of love, and it is safe to say, that Brown and his team of musicians and producers accomplished this goal.

Brown is trying to bring back that authentic sound that has been missing on the R&B radio airwaves for decades, and he is on the right path. There is a rawness, vulnerability, and an integrity to his new music.

The Verdict

Overall, “The Art of Making Love” showcases J. Brown’s growth and maturity as an R&B/soul recording artist. His vocals are smooth and resonant on this musical effort, where the listener can slight recall Brian McKnight.

It delves beyond the surface and it explores the deeper emotions that pertain to love. This CD is worth checking out.
