After a boring opening set from The Loners Club, Jones was the true star of the evening.
Jones introduced his music as songs that his fans might have “danced to,” “kung fued to them,” and even “twerked to them.” “I’m happy to be here tonight,” he said in his eloquent British accent. “Let’s get going.”
He opened with “Pearl in the Shell,” where purple, green and orange lights dimmed from the stage. “How are we feeling tonight?” he asked, and played the piano on “The Prisoner,” as he took his audience back to 1989.
“Thank you so much,” he said, and asked the crowd’s permission if it was okay for him to perform a brand new song, and their answer was a resounding “yes,” as different images displayed on the giant televised screen. After expressing his gratitude, he went on to introduce his exceptional band members, which featured Jonathan Atkinson on the electric drum and the ever-talented Robbie Bronnimann on keyboards and sequencing.
Jones described “Hide and Seek,” as the official “favorite song of his,” which he delivered a haunting rendition on piano, as blue lights shined from the stage. Equally impressive was the performance of his smash single “Things Can Only Get Better.”
The Verdict
Overall, Howard Jones was able to put on a high-energy show at The Paramount, as he brought his fans back to the late 80’s. Jones truly still is the king of synth pop, and he sounded awesome. His stage presence is to be commended, and his live show garnered an A rating.
