Multi-platinum-selling pop star Hilary Duff (“Lizzie McGuire” fame) released her latest studio album “Luck…. or Something,” which is her first new music in a decade.

The project was co-written by Duff, and produced by her husband, Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Matthew Koma and Brian Phillips.

The album opens with the mid-tempo and bubbly “Weather for Tennis,” and it immediately breaks into the vigorous “Roommates,” where the listener can slightly recall Taylor Swift (and that ought to be taken as a compliment), and the somber “We Don’t Talk.”

“Future Tripping” is quite refreshing, and she picks up the pace with the up-tempo and nonchalant “Growing Up,” where she is able to re-imagine Blink-182’s “Dammit,” twist it, and make it her own as she blends new verses with its original chorus.

Equally noteworthy are “The Optimist,” “You, from the Honeymoon,” and “Holiday Party,” which has a retro vibe to it.

After the uplifting “Mature,” it closes with “Tell Me That Won’t Happen” and the atmospheric “Adult Size Medium,” where she leaves her listeners yearning for more.

Duff will be out touring to promote her new album as part of “The Lucky Me Tour.” On August 5th and 6th, Duff will be headlining Madison Square Garden in New York City. Duff will be joined by special guests La Roux and Jade LeMac on this tour.

The Verdict

Overall, Hilary Duff shines on her latest studio offering “Luck… or Something,” which showcases her growth and maturity as a vocalist, songwriter, and storyteller.

She is able to take her fans on a journey through her music, where she is able to catch them up on her life via these 11 highly eclectic songs.

Duff is able to balance her synth-pop energy with some intimate, personal adult themes that her audience is bound to find relatable.

It has some ‘00s nostalgia to it, and she is not afraid to be raw and vulnerable on this musical effort, where her vulnerability is the listener’s reward.

Hopefully, this is a harbinger for more great music to come from Hilary Duff in the future.

Each song on this 11-track collection has its own identity, where there is something for every person’s mood.

At the same time, this makes it hard for the listener to select a personal favorite track. This beautiful album garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
